shanghaiChinese and Italian designers share the spotlight

AN exhibition of the work by young designers has recently opened at Senlan Shopping Mall in the city’s Free Trade Zone. Themed “Dialogue Milan, Design Life,” the exhibition showcases a series of furniture, lighting and household items from designers in both Milan and Shanghai.

Outside Senlan mall sits a huge triangle designed by famous Italian illustrator Cesare Moncelli. It supports two relief sculptures — one represents Shanghai, the other Milan — that indicate a connection between the two sister cities.

The exhibition, which runs through January 4, comprises two parts. The Eastern Exhibition Area on the first floor showcases the works Chinese designers unveiled at Milan Design Week, including Zhang Lei’s leisure chair made from paper and Zhang Junjie’s bamboo light covers.

The Western Exhibition Area is on the second floor and showcases works by leading designers such as Marc Newson, Thomas Heatherwick, Tom Dixon, Rodolfo Dordoni and Marcel Wanders. Heatherwick was one of the chief designers of the UK Pavilion, which became known as the “Seed Cathedral,” at Shanghai Expo.

The “Timeline” section links the two areas. A series of pictures and videos trace Milan Design Week’s history over the past 52 years and look at how new ideas form when designers from different countries meet.

Senlan mall is built on the former Expo site in the Pudong New Area, making it a great choice to promote the Milan Expo. All works at the exhibition are for sale.

Milan hosts the next World Expo between May 1 and October 31, 2015.

In the central exhibition area, a tree sits on top of the world, highlighting the Milan Expo’s theme: “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.” The world fair will look at how technology, innovation, culture, traditions and creativity relate to food and diet.

Milan has established itself as a major world fashion and design capital. It hosts several international events and fairs every year, including Milan Fashion Week and Milan Furniture Fair, the largest of its kind in the world.

Milan Design Week, held every April, is one of the most important design events in the world and covers architecture, fashion, accessories, and lighting.

Last year, more than 10 Chinese designers took part in Milan Design Week. Zhang Lei and his team became the first from China to win an award at the event.
