X-Tree lights up Xintiandi

USING visual projection and digital lighting, the French duo 1024 architecture presents an interpretation of the classic Christmas tree, the X-Tree, at Xintiandi’s South Block plaza. The 3D illuminated installation measures 25 meters in height and is composed of dozens of geometric cubes. Every evening between 5-10pm, a 5-minute electronic music and light show goes on at the tree every 30 minutes.

Designed by Pierre Schneider and Francois Wunshcel, the art installation was showcased four years ago in Brussels, Belgium. For its first appearance in China, they kept the tree’s original shape and size, but remade the visual effects and music to cater to the Chinese public, adding localized elements such as gongs and Chinese strings into the music.

During the daytime, visitors can climb up and down inside the cubes assembled together by scaffoldings to get a panoramic view of the area. When night falls, it transforms into a tree of light. “It’s about the contrast between tradition and modernity,” said Wunshcel.

The X-Tree installation stands at Xintiandi’s South Block through December 26.
