Work of Nepali artist exhibited in Suzhou

RAGINI Upadhyay Grela, as one of the most internationally renowned artists in Nepal, is having her solo exhibition at Wang Xiaohui Art Museum in Suzhou near Pingjiang Road through February 8. This is the 60th exhibition for Grela around the world. The exhibition features nearly 50 canvas, water-colors and prints created by her. The vibrant colors fused with an exotic ambience are a signature of her art. Now the first female director at Nepal Academy of Art, Grela has studied in Europe, but she insists that “her roots are still in Nepal.” After graduating from an art academy in India, she furthered her study in Scotland and England for prints. She was honored for a special award for her prints during her study at State Academy of Art and Design Stuttgart, Germany, in 1990.
“Wish,” the theme of the exhibition, is inspired by her trip to Chengdu and Beijing in 2015. “What I reflected under my brushstrokes are the awesomeness toward nature and a restraint of the human desire,” the artist said.
“Her painting is filled with imagination that conveys an yearning toward life and nature,” commented Wang Xiaohui, a world renowned Chinese female artist. “The dreamy tableau is poetic and romantic, revealing the beauty from the heart of the artist.”
Sited in the downtown of Suzhou, Wang Xiaohui Art Museum displays Wang’s photo, installation and video to the public. This is the museum’s first exhibition featuring a foreign artist.
China is currently holding the sixth consecutive “Year of China” in Nepal.
“Grela, as the director of Nepal Academy of Art, is also devoted to promoting the cultural exchange between Nepal and China,” Wang said. “We hope that visitors could have a better understanding toward Nepal and its contemporary art through this exhibition.”
