Well-traveled painter holds solo show in native city

STANDING in front of a large-scale oil painting depicting two maidens in an ancient imperial palace, one can easily be intoxicated by its tranquil atmosphere.
The canvas is called “Caress of the Moon VI.” It is now on view at a solo exhibition focusing on Chinese-Canadian artist Leng Hong. Entitled “From Dawn to Dusk II,” the show runs through January 17, 2016 at the ArtCN Art Gallery in Shanghai
Over a career spanning some 40 years, Leng has developed an oeuvre that bridges the various cultures he has encountered.
The widely traveled Leng graduated from the Shanghai Theatre Academy in 1978 and then moved to Bordeaux, France to broaden his knowledge of European art.
In 1992, he relocated to Canada and now travels regularly between Montreal and Shanghai, the latter being the city of his birth.
At the show in Shanghai, Leng’s works feature several of his favorite subjects: landscapes, still-lives and figures from classic Chinese poetry.
Most paintings were inspired by Tang (AD 618-907) and Song Dynasty (AD 960-1279) poems. Leng’s intention is to utilize his own pictorial language to create a “feeling of the ancient dynasties” thus “helping to bring out their stories and mystery.”
“I think there’s nothing that distinguishes art from the East and from the West. Artists arrive at the same destination by different routes thanks to their artistic journeys and their own experience. To me, art seems border-less, without separation,” the artist said.
