Opening the door on a modernizing China
CHRIS Ruffle’s book “China: An Insider’s Guide,” touches on a variety of topics of everyday life in the country.
In 51 insightful letters, Ruffle and his team present the China that they see and interact with on a daily basis. Topics include ghost towns, what’s in a Chinese name, the Chinese Dream, the changing countryside, the value of face and issues of corporate risk.
Given its extensive size, history and complexity, China is often seen through opaque generalizations, making it difficult to understand the rapidly changing country, says Ruffle, CEO of Open Door Capital Management Ltd.
Ruffle is fluent in Mandarin and has worked in Beijing and Shanghai for the past 30 years.
He has plenty to say, but his views are given added weight by other writers who range from locals to expatriates, each offering a distinct and often humorous voice.
