Modern educational caravan to travel Silk Road

THE so-called Dream Caravan, a mobile classroom, will travel along the Silk Road and bring teachers and ideas to less developed areas in China. The charity program will benefit students in West China, mainly in cities like Xi’an, Yingchuan, Lanzhou and Urumqi, by giving them the opportunity to attend creative classes and experience cutting-edge technologies like 3D printing.

The caravan is a mobile classroom with experienced volunteer teachers, multimedia eduction and latest gadgets to help local students broaden their horizon and improve their design skills. The program will take place over 36 days. It will start in Shanghai this month and cover more than 10 cities in west China along the ancient Silk Road.

The students will be able to participate in interactive classes.

The caravan also features a small library and a mobile cinema.

“Students in undeveloped regions also have the right to access advanced education methods and latest technologies such as 3D printing,” said King Francois, general manager of Materialise China.

Materialise, a Belgium-based 3D printing system provider, and non-profit group Adream.org are major organizers of the program.

Once restricted to research laboratories, modern 3D printing technology is being more widely used than ever before, especially in the medical, automotive, and aerospace industries. China is one of the world’s frontrunners in 3D printing, with growing support from the government, which is pushing hi-tech manufacturing. Integrating 3D printing in the design, fashion and entertainment industries makes it possible to create refined models in a wide range of materials and colors.

“China is still lagging behind the United States in 3D printing, mainly regarding awareness and ideas,” said Wang Lianfeng, vice president of the China 3D Printing Technology Industry Alliance. “It’s a nice way to integrate 3D printing with education,” Wang said of the caravan.
