Modern Shanghai artist going solo in Singapore
THE ShanghART Gallery in Singapore is to present a solo exhibition of Chinese contemporary artist Ding Yi from January 22 to March 15. It will be Ding Yi’s first solo in Southeast Asia, showcasing 11 paintings from his signature series “Appearance of Crosses,” one installation and a public art sculpture.
Ding is regarded as the forerunner of internationally acclaimed Chinese abstract artists. In his recent works, he explores the existence of unforeseen natural phenomenon, and his works have changed from vibrant colors to reserved dark color.
The installation — “Flying Stone” — seems to be a metaphor of infinite matter, demonstrating precariousness and the mystical galaxy. Known for his systematic compositions and variations of the same motifs “+” and “-”, the work is multiplications and the proliferation of these two simple brush-stroked gestures. Ding uses his cross-shaped symbols to interpret the strength of the Chinese spirit in this state of flux.
Over a decade, Ding has redefined his painting style in Shanghai, where he grew up.
