City focuses on creativity

TITLED “City of Future,” a forum focused on the relationship between art and urban development took place in Shanghai on November 26. It was jointly hosted by Top Tier, Shanghai Urban Design Alliance, and Chuangxinhui Corporate Alliance to share inspiring solutions and case studies and seek possible solutions that would suit Shanghai’s needs and development.
With keynote and guest speakers from a range of sectors, the forum attracted both scholars and representatives from the city’s urban planning authority, foreign governmental authorities and domestic companies.
“Urban development no longer lies in the traditional method of expansion. We now focus on upgrading by bringing art and culture into the city’s development, which will then become part of the city’s character,” said Jin Jianhong, deputy director of the Culture Development Bureau and Publicity Department of Xuhui District.
Shi Song shared the “Shanghai Master Plan 2040” regarding culture and art in urban development. He is the director of the research department at the Shanghai Urban Planning and Design Research Institute and Shanghai Urban Design Alliance.
In his view, art and culture are productive forces of creativity; and many cities have deployed culture as a means to promote themselves as well as to boost their overall competitiveness.
Chloe Li, consultant for Australia Council for the Arts and founder of YiXi Arts&Culture, presented international projects from Italy, UK, as well as shared with guests Australian public art project, the Megaphone Project by Flynn and Humphrey which engaged with citizens in art and vibrant the neighborhood and community.
