Free English course about Shakespeare

THE British Council is launching a six-week course on Shakespeare for non-native speakers who are trying to improve their language skills while learning more about the prolific author’s life and work.

The course, available online on FutureLearn website, is entirely free for participants.

Shakespeare Lives is supporting English language learning in China. Shakespeare’s 37 plays and 154 sonnets have added more than 3000 new words and hundreds of idioms to the English language.

The course, called “Exploring English: Shakespeare” recognizes Shakespeare’s legacy by exploring his enduring popularity, whilst helping global English learners to improve their English language skills. The British Council’s English experts will guide the audiences through the course by placing special emphasis on some of the words and expressions that Shakespeare introduced to the English language.

The course will look at five of Shakespeare’s plays, with learners being guided by actors and experts from around the world. They will explain and explore the universal themes in Shakespeare’s work, all of which remain strikingly relevant today. The plays to be studied are Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing, The Tempest and Macbeth.

The course starts January 11. For more information please visit
