Rediscovering ethnic chic for a good cause

COSMETICS giant Mary Kay partnered with independent designer brand Just For Tee and accessories label Timi Cheng at this month’s Shanghai Fashion Week to present the show “Lost, Reappear” which rediscovers the traditional Yi embroidery from Yunan Province and cashmere from Nepal.

Many of the models wore pieces made from hand-made Nepalese cashmere.

While the models were draped in breezy pieces, their embroidered clutches and shoes were undoubtedly the highlight. The bold colors, delicate works and the centuries-old tradition were the stars of the fashion show, an interesting contrast to the rather relaxed but chic garments in earthy colors.

The very delicate embroidered works were hand-made by women from Yi minority village in Yunnan Province, who are the beneficiaries from the project “Raise her business plan — Mary Kay Women’s Small Business Fund” launched in 2012. This project, supported by Mary Kay China, China Women Development Foundation, and the United Nations Development Program, has already benefited 2,650 people of which 90 percent are women.

The Sino-Nepal crossover collection was also a tribute to the first anniversary of the earthquake in Nepal earthquake.
