One step at a time for Simmons

ACCLAIMED for her directional style and effortlessly elegant eye, Tabitha Simmons is the designer of choice among fashion’s most venerated “It Girls” including Alexa Chung, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Moss and Miranda Kerr.

Simmons recently appeared at Lane Crawford at Times Square in Shanghai. She brought her spring/summer 2014 footwear collection to Lane Crawford, the only retailer to carry the brand in-store throughout Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland.

She was scouted as a model in the UK and has worked in various roles in the industry. She is a contributing editor to Vogue magazine; a runway stylist for the likes of Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana and Gucci; a mother of two; and since 2009, a shoe designer.

Q: Can you explain your design style, inspiration and concept?

A: Generally, I go with my instincts. I take inspiration from everything like travel and art to my English roots.

Q: From your perspective as a stylist and contributing editor at Vogue, what insights do you think you bring to the world of shoe design?

A: The beauty of my role as an editor is that I always see what’s new, what’s next. I think all this change helps me stay true to my brand’s aesthetic of classic with a whimsical twist.

Q: What signature designs can we see from your latest collection? And what will be the next design trend for shoes?

A: I have made updates to some of the staples in my collection. Alexa now comes with a chain to introducing new silhouettes that I’m quite fond of such as the Bonai.

Q: Has any shoe designer profoundly impacted your work?

A: I’m more impacted by the generations of cobblers that I work with and see when I visit the factories.

Q: With so many established brand names and new designers coming through, how do you stay competitive?

A: You have to stay true to your brand. I say this for styling, and I believe it is true for my collection — don’t follow trends. Do what is right for you.

Q: Would you like to design more for fashion or accessories? And how do you decide on projects?

A: I love accessories and would love to expand my brand in that capacity. I only take projects on that I believe in and feel suit my brand’s vision.

Q: What’s your must-buy fashion item this season?

A: I’ve been eying this Dolce & Gabbana lace dress.
