DSquared2 rocks fashion week

THE much-anticipated DSqaured2 runway show didn’t disappoint as it closed Shanghai Fashion Week on Thursday with its latest fall/winter 2014-15 collections.

Canada’s most famous fashion design duo, Dean and Dan Caten, came a long way to get to Shanghai’s catwalks, but they brought a taste of extravagance, theatrical ambience with explosive energy and sex appeal. Their shows are always one of the hottest tickets during runway season as they mix in dance, theater and music elements.

Perturbed and wonderful, the twin designers took inspiration from a striking woman for the fall/winter 2014-15 collection. Dramatic femininity is underscored with iconic 1960s shapes of swingy jackets, short shift dresses, capes and cropped pants, all of them matched with stunning jewels.

For the men, DSqaured2’s DNA showed off a range of rugged denim and leather looks. Shades of indigo and black denim were given bleached out, destroyed and ripped treatments, cut into a jumpsuit, or straight jacket-style jackets, some trimmed with buckles and paired with curved baggy jeans.

“We don’t have a single specific muse in mind, for every show and every collection we are inspired by a different and strong woman,” the Catens said in an e-mail interview.

“It’s our first fashion show in Asia and we are truly honored to close the Shanghai Fashion Week. It was interesting to present in a single show both the men’s and women’s collections. It was a full immersion into our world,” they said.

The twin designers found their way to make their stamp in an extremely competitive fashion industry and stay true to their own brand of individuality.

“The intelligent mix of irreverent Canadian wit and refined Italian tailoring, combined with an attention to detail are the foundation of the Dsquared2 philosophy that has given life to a unique concept of alternative luxury,” the twin brothers said. “Our motto is ‘Born in Canada, Living in London, Made in Italy’.”

“We have been a perfect duo from the very beginning. We always share everything and we are more than brothers. Having a twin brother is something very unique and a real fortune. You are never alone and you always have someone by your side. Twins power!” they added.

The Catens launched their first menswear collection in 1994, and in 2003 they launched their inaugural women’s collection.

The fashion house is continuously growing and expanding. They just opened a restaurant on the rooftop of their building in Milan.

“Looking back we feel so lucky. We get to live our dream and do what we love as our job. We would love for DSquared2 to continue to grow and we are planning a lot so … stay tuned.”
