Timeless family home in Moscow suburbs

THE suburban home of Masha and Sergei Palatnikov in Moscow is a highly functional and liveable space designed by Oleg Klodt and Anna Agapova to achieve a remarkably light and elegant property using an effortless combination of hues, materials and textures.

The homeowners love every detail of the interior from the dressing room and the lounge to the staircase. “I enjoy admiring the staircase. I can’t stop gazing at it. Whenever we have guests, the first thing I do is run upstairs and switch on the chandelier, so that it bathes the staircase in light and I’m so proud of it!” said Masha.

The house is 40 kilometers away from the center of Moscow to the southwest. The couple chose the spot with care — it’s a beautiful area in a hilly region between pine-forests, with wonderful clean air and small ponds. It’s a place where one can retreat from the noise and bustle of the Russian capital.

“We were looking for a house near the locations of all the members of our family. We’ve always lived in and around this area so we don’t need to move far from it. Our parents live nearby so we wanted to make our nest here — in this attractive and convenient development,” Masha said.

The property is divided into two houses, where the second house holds the spa and the sauna. The clients wanted to achieve a chalet feeling in this building: a cozy wooden structure, with contrasting colors, natural wood and a stove. It’s a contrast to the main building, with its impressive and distinguished interiors, which was a must for the couple.

The couple found the Oleg Klodt design firm through a friend’s recommendation and was immediately attracted to their work. “So I decided to put complete trust in their taste. It turned out to be the best choice working with the team that made such a difference from trying to get the work done by yourself. I spared myself the anxiety, and I’m very pleased with the results,” Masha said.

“The architects and designers had envisaged everything perfectly — I wanted a house that stood outside the confines of time, so that the interiors wouldn’t age emotionally. And that’s exactly what we’ve achieved. I’m completely sure that when we come into our home in 10 years time, we will still enjoy the feeling that it’s as nice and beautiful as it is now,” she added.

Designer Anna Agapova said: “This residential project was a real architecture ‘coup’ for us as designers, in that we were able to achieve the utmost appearance of lightness and elegance with an effortless combination of hues, materials and textures.

“The clients themselves had a very significant influence on the process of work on the interiors. More than any other factor, the close and warm relationship between the members of this large family created a very special energy for this space — an atmosphere of a family home, which we realized when utilizing soft-colored textiles and upholstered furniture. Our bond of trust between us and our clients prompted opportunities for deploying unusual solutions when designing the interiors and for filling them art objects.”

Light plays a key role, in which a number of different lighting schemes are enabled — offering the interior to be lit as either a chamber-style space, or in a grand ceremonial style. Stained glass windows offer plenty of natural light during the day, and by evening they are bolstered by spotlights — for example, the onyx facades of the kitchen are spot lit.

The kitchen appears deceptively simple to the eye, yet in reality is a remarkable achievement in multi-functionality and complex technology. An innovative feature is the white lacquered wall behind which a complete kitchen system has been installed. One end of the kitchen the island faces the large-plan living and dining area, and is finished in luxurious onyx that produces a beautiful luminous effect when backlit. Lacquered cupboards, polished stone and metallic finishes are all echoed throughout the rest of the interiors.

The master bedroom is conceived as a heaven of rest and relaxation, with sumptuous fabrics in soft pearl hues making a delightful contrast to the warmth of the nut wood flooring. A series of wall panels upholstered in Alcantara bring a pleasing rhythm to the space, whilst also concealing the entrance of a spacious dressing room beyond. The specially selected fabrics enhance the feeling of comfort; curtains are made from a double-sided material whose color changes according to the light shining on them.

For the homeowners, they consider the study the highlight of the space. “I spend a lot of my time there, and it’s a space in which I’m very comfortable. I even sometimes sit there at night,” Masha said.

The exact color and texture of each textile and item in this house were carefully selected by the designers to create a beautifully subtle tone-on-tone interior.

“Elements may sometimes be invisible but the spaces have a life of their own, where perceptions can change at any moment, depending on lighting, the angle of view and how closely it is observed,” Agapova said.
