Sustainable design with a splash of color

WHO is he ?

Daren Joy is a designer and the co-founder of Lifefactory, which produces eco-friendly products like glasses and baby bottles. As an award-winning integrative designer and architect, Daren has a sound sense of aesthetic and style. Daren begins his designs by deciphering how objects and environments affect people’s overall well-being. As a father of three, Daren has grown more and more committed to protecting the environment and, with that in mind, he joined Pam Marcus to bring his passion for life and design to Lifefactory. Daren’s designs have won the Metropolitan Home Magazine’s Home of the Year contests in 1996 and 2005.

Tell us about some of your work — what’s the design you are most proud of?

I really believe in the longevity of good design. It is always my hope that spaces and products that I design inspire a quality of life for many years to come. The residential design project of which I am the proudest also happens to be my first. It was started in 1991 and won the house of the year in 1996. I was able to blend more modern interpretations into the historic fabric of the neighborhood which created a new look. The original owners still live there happily. On the product side, I am most proud of the simple utility and everyday beauty of the mobile glass bottles we do at Lifefactory.

Are you currently involved with any project?

My primary focus right now is bringing design strategy into large tech companies. As with Lifefactory, I am excited about how my design thinking can affect thousands of people in their daily lives. I was able to take everything that I learned from the many different kinds of clients in residential architecture and distill the unifying ideas into a design experience that can appeal to a much wider group of people.

How would you describe your design style?

As I do more and more projects I do see a signature style emerging but I never start off with a style in mind. I usually focus first on what a space or object should feel like to the people who have to interact with it. I believe in color, utility and sustainability to make everyday products more personal and practical.

Where are you most creative?

I believe that creativity is the key to health and happiness. I try not to get stuck in ways of thinking that limit my ability to hear what others are saying and I try to appreciate different points of view. It can help to clarify what I truly believe myself. I feel the most creative is when I feel most challenged by a design or situation.

What does your home mean to you?

I always say that my home is my refuge. A place to connect with the essential qualities of family, safety and peace. I can find home in many places. I live in a houseboat on the San Francisco Bay and my home there means a constantly changing scenery of reflections and light on the water.

What do you collect?

I love collecting experiences and good conversations mostly. There is always room for them even in a small house.
