Furniture that is not just made for sitting on

DAKOTA Jackson is an American furniture designer and manufacturer of fine furniture who has established himself in the United States in the 1970s.

As a young man, Jackson immersed himself in modern dance and art scenes taking share in New York.

These experiences and his discovery of his gift as a builder — first of magic illusions, then furniture, and later grand pianos — deeply informed his design sensibilities and created the foundation of his enterprise. The Library Chair, developed by Jackson in the early 90s and first used in the San Francisco Public Library in 1996, has become an icon of institutional design and is now used in major libraries around the world, including Harvard, Stanford, and Queens University Belfast. His furniture can also be found in collections of leading museums, including The London Design Museum, New York’s Museum of Art and Design, Germany’s Deutsches Architektur Museum, and The Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.

My design practice extends from furniture design and manufacturing to concert piano design and building to architecture. There are many ‘favorite’ designs and projects over the span of my career. I am currently designing a new piano for Lang Lang, the Chinese virtuoso pianist. The Lang Lang will be his personal instrument as well as an edition to be manufactured by Steinway and Sons.

I have just designed a new collection, “Cosmopolitan” for the renown Chinese manufacturer Decca Home.

I was invited as a keynote speaker for Design Shanghai and to preview my newest collection for Decca Home. Decca and I have been working together since 2001. We have produced furniture for cruise ships, 5 star hotels and now the Cosmopolitan Collection for Decca Home. Decca is a family to me that I am proud to be a member of. Their capacity is endless with a desire for ongoing experimentation. They have no limits.

My designs are contemporary destined to become modern classics which many are now such as my Library Chair that are used by libraries around the world. Many of my pieces are museum collections across the world. They speak of machine, machinery, system and style.

I own a brownstone — a five story private house in the middle of New York City. It contains many different designs from over the span of my career. I am a pianist and own one of “The Tricentennial Pianos,” an edition of 300 pianos commemorating the invention of the instrument. I designed it. Steinway and Sons introduced the edition in 2000. My home is a place of music, the house in which my wife and I raised our two children, a garden retreat and the keeper of many wonderful memories and a bright future.

I am most in love with the new Shanghai Tower.

Trends come and go. Design must come from a place deep inside oneself where sincerity and the desire to improve lives is essential.
