French architect finds passion in exploration
WHO is he?
Jacques Garcia is a French architect, interior designer and garden designer, best known for his contemporary interiors of Paris hotels and restaurants. For his achievements, he was named commander of the Order of Arts and Letters, and a Chevalier in the Order of the Légion d'honneur.
Could you name the design you are most proud of?
At this point, it is my redesign of the Louvre’s decorative arts rooms. A life of passion and developed knowledge for this period brought me there. It has been an extraordinary journey and I am thankful to the Louvre for giving me the freedom to express my view. My goal was to best help the visitor grasp how unique in the decorative art history this period (1650-1790) was.
Are you currently involved with any project?
I just finished the new Baker collection, a mix of very different, or even opposite universes. I am inspired through my taste for travel, especially in India. The (Baker) Maradjah chair comes from an Indian chair in ivory. I have two of them at Champ de Bataille; they have followed me all my life. They are forms of grace, elegance, story, all what I love.
My risk-taking also is an inspiration to me. I love to follow new directions. The (Baker) Rachmaninov chest is completely different from what I do usually do. I am a specialist of curves, of rounded shapes, of sensuality for the eyes and the hands. It is new for me; it is a new adventure.
Describe your design style.
I am always searching for everything, instinctively drawn to the as-yet unknown, and always prepared to take unexplored paths. My style plays with frontiers and with time. I am free, and I invite everyone to be themselves.
My thing is not to economize with decor but to celebrate it. The most important thing is desire, the desire to outperform yourself and I find it very exciting to be able to use this new Baker collection to share my sense of aesthetics and sensuality with a large number of people.
What are the challenges?
A collection of furniture must tell a story in which each piece can have conversation with the others. Each piece of furniture must also be able to have an autonomous life. My challenge has been to create my own universe with qualities of elegance and comfort that everybody has the right to request today.
Where do you get inspiration?
For inspiration, it is always the same drive for me: I go back to origins, look at Greek antique vases, Roman mosaics and all the Parisian marvels that are around me.
