Edgy and classy combo in Scandinavian design

WHO is she?

Louise Roe is a Danish fashion designer who has branched out into interior design. She says she chooses her colors, materials and structures for her interior design products in exactly the same way as she would for fashion design.

Roe lives north of Copenhagen with her husband Jan and their four children. The Louise Roe showroom and office is located in the east of Copenhagen, where she often finds inspiration in the vibrant city life.

Tell us about your work.

My inspiration is the vibe and architecture of city life, and what I see when traveling the world.

The City Lights collection is inspired by the spectacular city skyline of cities like New York or Shanghai. In these buildings life is going on behind every window and when darkness falls, lights come on, creating a new scene.

The City Lights can be used with candlelights, flowers — whatever you prefer.

I love fine quality products and try to follow this in my designs — whether my sailor-knit products or hand-blown glass jars. These jars come in different sizes, each telling us a little story about how different we all are in size and height. They all have black-stained cork tops that give a stylish, clean look.

What projects are you currently involved in?

I’m involved in refurbishing a golf club in Hamburg. It needs a Scandinavian design touch in its clubhouse and restaurant.

Describe your design style.

Sophisticated simplicity, with a touch of architecture and graphic lines. All my designs reflect high quality and a great finish. I’d say they’re Danish and wider Scandinavian lifestyle accessory designs that are edgy and classy at the same time.

Where are you most creative?

I’m actually most creative away from my desk and office. Usually, I get ideas when I am on my own, whether that’s in my car, when waking up or making an association when I open a magazine and see something interesting. Ideas just come to me.

What does your home mean to you?

My home is my base in life. It is not filled with too much furniture or too many paintings as I need to feel calmness at home. My home is my friend and here it’s important to be creative, even when I cook, which I really love.

What do you collect?

I am not really a collector, but it makes me happy to buy a really good piece of furniture or a lamp.

Where would you like to go in Shanghai?

I’ve only been to Shanghai recently and feel there is so much more to explore. I really loved the old Soviet-style building where the exhibition I was at took place (the Shanghai Exhibition Center on Yan’an Road) and the contrast between the new and the old. It’s so funny to come out of an old historic building and then be surrounded by modern skyscrapers.

I also loved to investigate the traditional food markets, and again see the contrast between the modern coffee shops and traditional places.

The Up gallery created by David Wang or the Danish Paustian showrooms are the places to go if you need inspiration to decorate your home.

What will be the next big design trend?

More colors in our homes, more marble and wood, and woven fabrics in colors that inspire and make us feel happy.
