Danish designers with passion for practicality

WHO are they?

Karl Rossell and Tonny Glismand are founders of byKATO, an award-winning Danish design company dedicated to creating contemporary, highly usable products for everyday living. The company was established in 2010 with the byKATO name deriving from the first two letters of the founders’ names. They share a passion for designing honest, practical and affordable products.

Tell us about some of your works, and the one you are most proud of.

We only work with designs that we love. When we think back on the design that has the greatest importance for us, it must be our very first design, the byKATO T1 dining table, that won the world’s most prestigious design award in London, the Wallpaper* Design Award as the “world’s best dining table.” That meant a lot to us.

Are you currently involved with any project?

We are working with two new bicycles and a few new projects with international furniture brands. One of the bicycles is made almost in the backyard of Shanghai by one of our very good friends. The bike is for a European customer with wholesalers around the world. It has a huge international appeal and of course, we would love to see it running in Shanghai too.

Describe your design style.

We aim to bridge the gap between commercial industrial design and high-quality craftsmanship, by using honest and justifiable materials and paying careful attention to the tiniest detail.

We’re looking for originality and authenticity — products with character and a history that stand for the kind of craftsmanship that really takes heart and soul to achieve.

Where are you most creative?

We are most creative when we travel around the world. The inspiration comes from the environment around us, such as technology, new materials, creative workshops, commercial shops, friends, clothes, colors and the way people interact with each other.

What does your home mean to you?

Both of us are married and have kids, so our homes are of course a place for relaxation and a retreat from the daily rush, but it’s also a place that is full of activity and where everyone can have fun. Each of our houses clearly reflect that we both think it’s important that the home is a cozy place to live and not just another exhibition.

What do you collect?

Frankly, we are not really fancy collectors. But speaking of collecting designs our thoughts are suddenly focused on our kids. They are huge collectors of LEGO, which is just one of the coolest and optimal designs ever made. And it’s Danish!

Where would you like to go most in Shanghai?

We already went to Shanghai a few times and every time we’re there, we discover new amazing places and meet up with sweet, inspiring and creative people all around the city. We really love Shanghai.

What will be the next big design trend?

Natural materials such as solid wood will become ever more popular in modern homes, where its organic characteristics counter streamlined modern forms and provide a warm, earthy ambience that is both cosy and distinctive. There’s always room for objects with character and history.
