Bringing things from the past back to life
WHO is she?
Angela Panozzo is a Chinese/Italian designer currently living in Los Angeles with a base in Bologna, Italy. She has studied design in Milan and Los Angeles and grew up with an understanding that space influenced everyone. Her mission is to create beautiful, unique and functional spaces.
Tell us about some of your works, and the one you are most proud of.
I have worked on residential and commercial projects and the project which I’m most proud of is FU.MO, a cocktail lounge/restaurant which opened early this summer in Shanghai. This project is a tribute to the Futurism movement. I wanted to create a hip, edgy and comfortable atmosphere by unifying natural materials, which give warmth, color and intimacy and concrete flooring, glass and steel that give the space a modern feel. FU.MO is an open space that has different areas and the focal point is the cocktail counter.
Are you currently involved with any project?
Yes! A designer is always working on projects. One of the projects I’m currently working on is a residential beach house in Salento, southern Italy. The property contains three trulli (antique stone houses) and a new building, all gathered in a large garden with many olive trees. But my biggest project is building an international team that could develop unique ideas.
Describe your design style.
I don’t have a specific design style because I join lots of them in all my projects. I bring back to life things and objects of the past that recall my roots by placing them and adapting them with contemporary designs, making them functional and consistent with modern requirements. The heart of my creations are colors with inspirations related to prints, fabrics, shapes and textures.
Where are you most creative?
My inspiration comes from daily experiences, from a walk outside, a book, a movie, a visit to the museums. And my creativity comes out behind my desk in front of my computer, pencils and blank pages. I start by hand sketching and end with digital renderings and collages.
What does your home mean to you?
My home is my nest, my shelter, my peace. A continuous work in process.
What do you collect?
Small vintage objects, design and art books, notebooks with printed, colored, recycled, rice paper.
Where would you like to go most in Shanghai?
I love getting lost in the former French Concession. The streets are lined with beautiful trees and in the warm seasons the song of cicadas keeps you company. I also love this area because of the liberty buildings and the shops that have survived the wild urbanization.
What will be the next big design trend?
I believe that the next big trend will still be the glorification of handcrafts, custom furnishing distinguished by unique details away from logos and trademarks.
