Box office (Shanghai cinemas May 19-25)

“X-Men: Days of Future Past” debuted in Shanghai on May 23. Three days after its release, it reached the top for weekly box-office earnings. The latest movie in the X-Men franchise attracted more fans as cast members now include new faces like Peter Dinklage and Fan Bingbing.

Zhang Yimou’s “Coming Home” keeps its place on the list more than one week after its release. The love story directed by one of China’s most renowned directors is considered touching and reflected a generation’s love and life experience back in the 1970s.

The top five movies in Shanghai cinemas from May 19-25, followed by gross earnings, number of screens and number of days in release, as compiled by Shanghai United Circuit, are:

1. “X-Men: Days of Future Past ”

Gross: 19.2 million yuan

Screens: 6,611

Days in release: 3

Wolverine travels back in time trying to change history and stop an event that will result in the future doom of both humans and mutants.

2. “Coming Home”

Gross: 11.1 million yuan

Screens: 9,350

Days in release: 10

Lu Yanshi and his wife Feng are forced to separate for many years when he is sent to a labor camp. After he returns home, his wife no longer recognizes him.

3. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”

Gross: 5.6 million yuan

Screens: 6,424

Days in release: 22

4. “The Great Hypnotist”

Gross: 1.9 million yuan

Screens: 2,712

Days in release: 27

5. “My Old Classmate”

Gross: 860,000 yuan

Screens: 1,745

Days in release: 31
