Tea is a joyful cup of liquid wisdom

AS an all-time favorite beverage, tea has been a top choice if you’re looking for a refreshing taste without calories. When the mercury climbs up to 40 degrees, an iced cup of tea is a temporarily lifesaver (well, air-conditioner is the real “lifesaver” ) and chills us down effectively. However, more shops now tend to develop an interesting sideline in business other than tea. There are tea shops offering more services and treats to lure customers — some aiming for higher sales income, some for a more unique experience. No matter whether you are a serious tea lover, you will love these well-presented crossover tea shops in the city. Let’s check out!

Bu’er Teashop

With two establishments in Shanghai, the Taiwanese tea shop mostly uses traditional Chinese tea for its wide range of tea drinks, from tea latte to ice-dripped tea.

Bu’er Teashop claims to use award-winning tea leaves from Taiwan, including: oolong, jasmine green tea, pu’er, tieguanyin, and black tea. The most popular item is Er’gai tea (22-38 yuan, US$3.3-5.6), freshly brewed tea topped with thick cream. There are three different flavored cream toppings: durian, caramelized chestnut, and rose salt cheese cream. It’s highly recommended not to add any sugar into your tea, as you can enjoy natural tangy citrus taste in lady grey or fresh floral smell in jasmine green tea. The topping is thick and velvet creamy, creating a sharp contrast against the tea while adding a gentle sweetness to alter the taste.

The hot tea is made with a sleek white tea brewer, which allows the tea to be brewed at an ideal specific temperature constantly, based on the type of tea.

The open bar invites to you to watch your tea being prepared and brewed. Alternatively, you can choose some converted version of campagne, featuring soft crust rather than traditional crispy coat. Bu’er has developed a whole range of campagnes, using not only fruits but tea as well. For example, Lady grey (18 yuan) is not only a tea drink here but the name for the bread using Lady grey in the recipe. The light tea flavor is nice as the bread also has a truly sweet creamy filling. Sound yummy?

Address: B2-10, Cloud Nine Shopping Mall (Hongkou), 388 Jiangwan Rd W.

Opening hours: 10am-10pm

Recommend: Er’gai tea, campagnes

Luckylife

Hidden in Super Brand Mall, Luckylife is a great place to sip fruit tea and be lazy. The shop has no chairs only bean bags. Customers are very welcome to lie or sit down and enjoy its signature fruit teas (20-22 yuan), each featuring dragon fruit, kiwi, orange, lime, mango and watermelon totaling over 100 grams with tea of your choice — light oolong, green tea or black tea. Fresh fruit tea is not a new idea but the only way to enjoy it makes it a must-try if you are a boyfriend/husband going shopping with your lady or you look for a place to let your little ones have fun in the summer. There are many customers watching dramas on the phone or snooze a little. Thus, the shop has an unwritten rule that customers can sit up to one hour upon each order because it’s too comfy to make a move.

If you like a certain bean bag, you can buy it and take it back home for a relatively fair price.

NNTea

The three-story NNTea has a range of tasty cold brew teas. As you enter the store, you will run into a huge plate, displaying all different teas that you can try in store. On the right, three different cold brew teas are on offer to sample for free.

Thanks to a semi-separate seating plan, the two upper floors not only offer a good view through its large windows but also a nice place for SOHO workers or to take a break.

Afternoon tea deal (58 yuan in-store) includes a dessert and a tea of your choice. The presentation of tiramisu (in a box) is very innovative and appealing to eyes but the taste needs a bit of an improvement.

Meanwhile, its slow-postcard service allows you to write a few lines to yourself as the postcard will be delivered to you according to the date you specify from now to 2020.

Packed tea bags or tea leaves are available for purchase.
