Spicy Lounge hits the right spot

OPENED less than a year, Roy Yang’s Sichuan hotpot venue, Wu Chu, at Shanghai K11, has managed to find a rare success in a fickle market, where local celebrities are often spotted. The hotpot restaurant has managed to keep customers coming back in their droves because of its attention to detail most places generally overlook.

Yang quickly found another space on Taicang Road to expand his business — a Sichuan snack food concept this time.

The newly opened Spicy Lounge is a casual meal concept but shares the same quaint design that made the hotpot venue such a hit. The 50-square-meter interior is sleek in style with custom-made furniture in terrazzo and brass. Yang even invited his good friend, famous ceramist Hai Chen, who made 200 noodle bowls, each hand painted differently.

The menu is simple yet features most of the signature snacks from the region.

“As a Sichuan native, it was such a challenge to find authentic tastes in town over past years, so I decided to bring a famous chef from Chengdu and opened my own place,” Yang said.

Spicy lounge went back to basics and took the cuisine back to its essence — authentic regional snacks or small plates, tweaking it to suit local palates from less spicy to original spicy so customers can choose according to their capability for the fiery level.

Each snack dish has large and small portions. I’ve tried several of them and they have got the formula right. They use all the ingredients brought from Sichuan Province and make the food layered with complicated flavors integrating pungent, hot, sweet, aromatic and salty tastes.

Pork lungs in chili sauce and clear noodles in chili sauce are delicious and authentic. The fragrant pepper flavor leaves a mild tingly numbness lingering on the tongue. Sichuan chili oil is widely used in its many snacks and dishes that are made by pouring hot oil, already seasoned with many ingredients from ground, dried, chili pepper, sesame seeds and fried peanuts.

Different choices of noodles and dumplings are famous from this beautiful province so they are highly recommended at Spicy Lounge. Of course the Sichuan staple Dandan noodles are a good pick as are several other dishes.

Spicy Lounge is the kind of place you will often go back to for its easy, comfortable fare. You will be surprised by the curated drink selection as well. Try Beerlao, the national beer of Laos, which is a rare find in Shanghai.
