Sparkling spots in shadow of Bund

YUANMINGYUAN Road, just behind the Bund, is a short street that has received increasing attention in recent years. This is not just down to the five-star Peninsula Hotel that opened in 2009, but also due to the presence of the Yi Feng Galleria in an elegant historic building. This gathers together luxury fashion brand stores, famous night club Muse and fine restaurants and cafes.
Here we explore some elegant and high-ended venues where you can spend an enjoyable afternoon around Yuanmingyuan Road.
Patek Philippe
After being based in the Bund 18 building for seven years, Patek Philippe has moved to the historic building at Rockbund, also on the Bund, the former residence of the British Consul General. With this move last year, Patek Philippe opened its first "maison" in Asia, with status and functions comparable to the Patek Philippe salon in Geneva. The brand has salons in Geneva, London and Paris. Covering an area of 1,228 square meters, the Shanghai maison is not only a showcase for watchmaking masterpieces but also provides guests with a special atmosphere, communicating the brand's prestige accumulated over 173 years.

Pineider
Italian luxury brand Pineider widened its Asian reach with a flagship at Yi Feng Galleria one year ago, following success in Japan and South Korea. The store showcases elegance and style with its black and white furniture which recalls its stores in Milan, Rome and Florence. The layout highlights product categories such as personalized stationery and Pineider leather goods for travel, business and leisure. Founded in 1774 in Florence, Italy, Pineider is renowned for handmade stationery, luxury leather goods, writing instruments and wedding items.

Muse on the Bund
Muse is not only well-known for its co-owner and brand ambassador - famous Hong Kong actress Carina Lau. As the flagship of the three Muse clubs in China, Muse on the Bund opened last July. As with previous incarnations in the city, it has established itself as a hot spot for Shanghai's party people. The club itself offers the high-octane clubbing Muse has long been renowned for. Expect the same energetic DJs and grooves to keep the party going through to the break of dawn. The venue, located in Rockbund, is a spacious, stylish 3,000-square-meter temple of entertainment and dining, say its owners. This combines a fine Italian restaurant, a lounge area, a rooftop terrace and private VIP rooms. As a sparkling centerpiece to the lounge and club areas, the 200-square-meter Crystal Bar showcases a massive collection of 10,000 bottles, ensuring an almost endless supply of top-quality cocktails and spirits, guaranteed to keep revellers in a party mood.

Imperial Treasure Restaurant
If you're a fan of Cantonese cuisine, Imperial Treasure Restaurant on the fourth floor of Yi Feng Galleria will not disappoint, with its authentic dishes and delicate decor. It's a welcome addition to the Bund which has been home to many high-end restaurants but few that really feel cater for families with children who want to dine in the area. But this is a very large, family-friendly bustling Cantonese restaurant. Imperial Treasure has an extensive menu and does it particularly well. Lunch with special Cantonese dim sum menu is only available on weekends, and reservations are strongly recommended.

Tao's Home and Café
If you find yourself near the Bund and just want a cold beer at a reasonable price in some nice surroundings, then you would do well to try Tao's Home and Café. Hidden behind the Bund at the corner of Yuanmingyuan Road and Dianchi Road, it also has a space in the back for a private party. The small café has a Western feel with clean lines and a light airy feel. It's a place where travelers are welcome, and there's an interesting array of information about local events to browse. In addition to selling beer, tea, cakes and hand-made ice cream, Tao - the name means pottery in Chinese - is also a craft shop. Check out its collection of Chinese porcelain on one wall and a selection of local crafts, all of which are for sale.
