Plazas creating a Pudong cool zone

Laya Plaza and the Thumb Plaza on Fangdian Road in Pudong New Area are helping make the area more commercially mature and attractive to shoppers. It gathers fashion brands, restaurants and cafes and is getting a reputation as a pleasant area for nearby residents and those from further afield to hang out. Let's take a walk around, take a break and explore something new in Pudong!

K+ Cafe & Zakka

K+ Cafe & Zakka brings some campus cool to Miaopu Road - complete with a reading room and second hand bargains.

More like a tidy student's living room, the coffee shop has several bookshelves and you can find customers reading on comfortable sofas while enjoying a cup of coffee. Coffee is priced around 30 yuan (US$4.9), and homemade cookies and cakes are always the best accompaniments for afternoon tea (and coffee). Goodies include French puddings, cheesecake, brownies and tiramisu.

The cafe also doubles up as a second hand store, where you can browse among vases, bamboo baskets, old telephones and other vintage items.

This pasta house offers new takes on traditional Italian pasta, with 28 different pasta dishes and changes to the menu every three months.

It's also known for its fresh ingredients - including olive oil and cream products imported from Europe.

Recommendations include penne with cream sauce and bacon; spaghetti with clam and pesto cream sauce; shell pasta with chicken and pumpkin cream sauce, spaghetti with spicy tomato olive cuttlefish sauce. Pizzas and other Italian favorites also feature on the menu.

The average cost per person ranges from 70 yuan to 100 yuan (US$11.3-16.1).

Servimex Home

This latest branch of Servimex Home in Laya Plaza is the second for this Swiss home design brand in Shanghai - first one on Daduhe Road in Putuo District.

The bright and delicate displays in the shop makes Servimex one of the most attractive stores in the mall, offering high quality, European style and functional home decoration and furnishing solutions.

It stocks home decor and everyday items for the kitchen, living room, bedroom, office and dining room, including cups, plates, pots, glasses, lighting, home organization items and tables and chairs.

The summer sale is on now.

Servimex Home was founded in Switzerland during the 1920s when brothers Willy and Dagobert Schneidinger, recognized that people were looking to spend more on their homes.

Wan Li Restaurant

Located in the Renaissance Shanghai Pudong Hotel, Wan Li is an elegant and contemporary Chinese restaurant featuring dishes from several provinces renowned for their sumptuous cuisines. Famous Cantonese and Shanghai dishes are featured, and at weekends the dim sum lunch buffet is very popular.

For this summer, Chef Kevin has selected a range of healthy dishes based on traditional Chinese recipes.

Fried egg white with preserved radish and bitter gourd (48 yuan/US$7.7) is strongly recommended - bitter gourd is very high in Vitamin C and reduces internal heat.

Other healthy fare includes pumpkin and cereal congee (20 yuan), which is rich in vitamins and protein, while marinated shredded green papaya is rich in amino acids which are good for the skin.

Opening hours: 11am-2:30pm (lunch), 5-10pm (dinner)
