Can’t beat a freshly filled bagel

EATING it plain or as an alternative to sandwiches, bagels have become more popular in the city because of its enchanting shape and wide range of flavors. If croissants make traditional sandwiches fluffy and creamy, then bagels are the versatile hero in taste and a more satisfying treat for your tummy to start a hardworking day! What’s more, the bread is much healthier than its “sibling” donut. We tested a few popular sandwich shops/bakeries that are worth trying.

Boom Boom Bagels

Renowned for its award-winning bagels, the café offers both house signatures and DIY options. There are several different flavored bagels available, including: plain, sea salt, sesame, and parmesan.

The parmesan bagel, recommended by the staff, goes very well with the chili pork as the hot bread gives an intriguing scent of cheese. The pickled cucumber has a nice twist thanks to its strong acidity.

Macou’s

Bagels have been featured in many hot Instagram posts. Now it’s time to be creative and make your own!

Macou’s, a local bakery hidden in the basement of a shopping mall Station Insite, specializes in bagels and soft-crust campagnes. The only establishment in Shanghai has been open for two years so far.

Here, the bagel has 15 different flavors, among which you can find some special ones such as goji berry and earl grey tea. It is a great challenge to those who can’t make up their minds easily.

It is highly recommended to warm bagels (in an oven or microwave) before eating. Otherwise, it will be too hard. The warming service is complimentary upon request.

According to the staff, the bagel can be kept fresh for two days upon purchase at room temperature or stored in a freezer for up to six months.

The matcha bagel tastes nice enough when eating it plain. The bread itself has a strong matcha flavor without much sweetness but the red bean filling is sweetened. If you love experimenting, the bagel can be more versatile if you add fruits, veggies or proteins such as smoked salmon, prawns and chicken.

The store now has a special offer — buy four bagels and get 15 yuan off any campagne.
