Bringing the flavors of France to Xinhua Rd
WHEN Bistro 321 le bec opened three years ago, tree-lined Xinhua Road started embracing a French flair air. Recently, a new concept opened on the street, near the bistro, defining the area as the ideal destination for a French gourmet experience — from a Parisian breakfast to aperitifs and dinner afterwards.
Epicerie & Caviste 62 le bec, opened by the same owner behind Bistro 321 le bec, Nicolas Le Bec, is French gourmet and wine heaven. It selects and creates exceptional French deli products every day. So any French native living in Shanghai would find it just as good as the tastes from home.
Behind the Parisian-style epicerie, which refers to the eat-in and take-out cafe, there is the Caviste, where one can find exciting and interesting wine from a wide range of price tags and every wine region in France.
Before opening Bistro 321 le bec, Nicolas opened a wine company importing selected French wine. Most of the winemakers had worked with Nicolas during his long stint running his two Michelin-starred restaurant in Lyon. The direct access to the wine producers is the reason they provide quality wine at reasonable prices. Some of the boutique wine labels can be only found here.
The tasting room is meticulously designed for sampling different wines and cold plates.
Chic yet comfortable furnishings with metallic accents are enhanced by the beautifully displayed wine fridges along the wall. Different price ranges are clearly indicated on fridges starting from 150 yuan (US$22.83) for a bottle of red wine and 180 yuan for the white.
There is a selection of 25 references for each type of budget. Guillaume Tu, a partner with Epicerie & Caviste, is always on site to guide customers choose an ideal bottle of French wine.
“We don’t consider ourselves a wine bar but a wine shop where people can find friendly-priced bottles to drink at home. However, it’s also an ideal spot to open a bottle and have an aperitif with friends after work or before dinner,” he said.
I fully enjoyed my French aperitif at Caviste. I picked three jars with different fillings Le Bec is famous for. The salmon, herring, artichoke in olive oil was absolutely divine, a rare find in Shanghai as well. I simply enjoyed every bite paired with a glass of Chardonnay from Burgundy.
The pate en croute, a specialty from the Champagne region, is a must-try. Surrounded by the bread crust, the pate featuring a mixture of chicken, pork, foie gras and morilles (morel) tastes delicious and delicate and goes perfectly with baguette. The touch of foie gras and morel gives it more buttery, delicate flavor.
