Boteco serves up a samba-style taste at Found 158

WHEN it comes to enjoying a spot of casual dining in the new lifestyle hub of Found 158, well-priced restaurants and bars that are not pretentious are not hard to find.

Located down in the compound, tucked inside one corner, Boteco keeps foodies-in-the-know coming back for its delectable Brazilian food and drinks.

Boteco represents those typical after-work hang-out spots (local watering hole) in Brazil that dishes up delicious fare from authentic snacks and small bites to meat cuts. Founders of Boteco, Fabiano Coelho and Geraldo Thomazini, said during the years living in the city, they had missed a lot of the savory bar snacks, the real caipirinha, the chilled ambience and Latin music.

“There was no such Brazilian bar in Shanghai like back home — casual and humble with the authenticity,” Coelho said. To provide a “real” bar for Brazilians, Latins and even locals, he set up a relaxed vibe with some artifacts brought from home.

Firstly, the world-famous Brazilian cocktail caipirinha is what you should order. Boteco probably offers the best caipirinha in town, made of cachaca, the Brazilian take on rum that distills fresh sugar cane juice rather than molasses.

Good quality lime muddled with white sugar and ice, then a shot of liquor you will have one of the most refreshing cocktails for the summer season.

They also offer different variations based on the classic caipirinha, for example caipirinha with ginger and cloves, or Yakult, strawberry, pineapple and other fruity flavors.

When having Brazilian’s favorite cocktails, be sure to order the bar snacks including: pao de queijo (baked cheese bread) and coxinhas (chicken croquettes). The savory cheese puffs made with tapioca flour are best served warm from the oven, while the raindrop-shaped coxinhas are delicious fried croquettes of seasoned, shredded chicken.

I preferred to add a bit of chili oil to these fried snacks that keep me reaching for another piece. Bolinho de feijoada (black beans and bacon croquette) was also an option to get a taste of Brazil’s national dish “feijoada” (the hearty stew of black beans) in a crispy way.

Boteco offers a variety of Brazilian bar snacks. For the more hearty meals, one can either pick the Mortadela com queijo, the classic sandwich from Sao Paolo’s municipal market, the Steak Milanese, which is the breaded steak topped with tomato sauce and grilled cheese, or the Brazilian classic cut topped with confit onions, served with rice, seasoned black beans and fries.

On Friday and Saturday, Boteco hosts “samba night” where one can share the Latin passion dancing and laughing without traveling far.
