A perfect ‘Diner’ for a brunch or any munch

TECHNICALLY you’re here for brunch, but the brunch menu is served daily at Diner. It’s all the comforts one can get all day.

Diner, the new venue opened recently at the corner of Wuyuan and Wulumuqi Road, is loud and packed on a weekend where you can sit at the bar and enjoy an authentic American style experience.

The portions are big as well, like those diners in the States, so it will be a great way to try out dishes with two to three people sharing.

The venue has two floors yet the first floor space is only open to the public so far. There are a few four-people tables and a handful of seats at the bar toward the back. The decor is mostly white, clean and retro.

It’s an idyllic place to brunch on weekends but you are not guaranteed to have a table immediately. And with hearty dishes like biscuits and sawmill gravy, pancakes, French toast, there’s no chance you’ll leave hungry. A list of brunch cocktails and soft drinks offer quick remedies for those who are hungover. You can’t go wrong with the Bloody Mary with their homemade spam, piquillo peppers and manzanilla olives.

As an American concept, all-day brunch venue, it is not the place for those who are committed to healthy eating. Diner offers dishes that are flavorful, hearty but not so light, especially when you grab dinner here.

I went to try out a Sunday dinner recently and it has a more relaxed vibe than at a packed brunch time.

I started off with the Roast Pumpkin and it turned out to be a delightful dish. It was a much more sophisticated meal than the name suggests. Candied chili, water cress and peanuts mixed in with salted yogurt and roast pumpkin. I did enjoy the creative side of the dish and the mixture of flavors and textures.

Having heard Diner offers good French toasts and pancakes, I decided to give it a try as well. They are both available in three gradations: classic, fun and gold standard. I chose the gold standard pancake (78 yuan). It arrived at the table with a large selection of pancakes with hazelnut butter, crushed Ferrero Rocher, bacon and fried banana. It was moist and tasty yet not so impressive.

As much as I wanted to taste more dishes, the large portions simply prevented me. I might go back another time to try the Gold Standard Burger, which the menu suggests is salivatingly topped with Russian dressing, sauerkraut, pastrami, caramelized onion and Gruyere.
