A gritty taste of southern comfort for a night out
CASUAL restaurants that serve decent food and drinks seem to open every week in the city and Palmetto, as one of them, is certainly one worth checking out.
Inside the 800 Show where Ruijin Cajun used to be, Palmetto serves low country food of the United States which is the cooking traditionally associated with South Carolina and coastal Georgia.
There, people don’t eat to live. They seem to live to eat.
The new restaurant has a rather simple design, with some beautiful, exotic tiles on the floor and even on the walls.
The partners were excited to dig up the original floor during the renovation, which allowed them to design the interior space around the original features.
The vibe is casual and comfortable, with an international mix of people coming for some Southern food and a beer after work, enjoy the food and socialize.
And it’s full of Americans after comfort food.
During my visit, chef Gavin McAleer told me he serves comfort food and the food he eats at home. From Charleston, South Carolina, he ran a restaurant at his hometown before.
From the menu, you will understand what people like in low country: boiled peanuts, cornbread with sorghum butter, deviled eggs, shrimp and grits, Southern fried chicken, and country fried steak and meatloaf.
Fortunately we don’t need fly to the southern part of the States to sample those delicacies.
I started my dinner with the region’s official snack: boiled peanuts (18 yuan), perfect starter with a beer.
Cornbread with sorghum butter was also a favorite (18 yuan). The butter-tasting cornbread was slightly sweet and melt-in-your-mouth. And sorghum butter was magnetic in its appeal and irresistible on hot cornbread.
The regional signature dish to try at Palmetto is shrimp and grits (78 yuan). The Low Country people love their shrimp pulled fresh from the ocean. And they love their grits.
When combining them, often with some sausage and spices, you’ve got a feast. Tender shrimps are served over cheese-and-milk-flavored grits in this traditional low-country favorite.
And they also embellish the classic with other ingredients. Aside from shrimp, one can also choose grillades, catfish or vegetable.
I was almost full after the grits yet still couldn’t resist the Southern fried chicken (68 yuan) served with coleslaw, pickle and biscuit.
A Southern classic, no one can resist, especially when it comes with Alabama white and gravy source.
