Stage version of Maugham novel comes to Shanghai

THE stage play “The Moon and Sixpence,” directed by Hong Kong director Desmond Wai-Kit Tang, will come to Shanghai in September. The play is adapted from a novel written by British playwright, novelist and short story writer Somerset Maugham.
This story is loosely inspired by the life of French painter Paul Gauguin. The hero is Charles Strickland, a middle-aged stockbroker who abandons his wife of 17 years and children, and moves to Paris to become a painter as he has always wanted to do. In Paris, he meets a Dutch painter who helps him, but then he seduces the painter’s wife and deserts her. Strickland eventually goes to Tahiti, where he lives with a native woman and their children.
The stage play employs first-class performances, stage-design and music to bring to life this touching story on the power of art and its influence on the life of a man.
