‘Salina’ — A universal and timeless story set in Africa
SALINA — The Last Vertebra, a play written by Laurent Gaude, was performed by Brazil’s Amok Theatre and premiered in Rio de Janeiro in 2015.
The writer takes us to ancient Africa for an universal and timeless story. It is inspired by African-Brazilian traditions, especially Congado (a kind of theatrical and religious performance) and Candomble (African-Brazilian religion), but also formed by elements coming from different civilizations, such as the Greek tragedy and the African epics.
Salina is an epic saga that takes us on a journey of love, conflicts and hatred among African tribes. The theme of the play is hate and forgiveness.
The play was conceived from a project which involved several steps: training for the actors, research and artistic interchanges. In this way, a new Africa was invented. It was developed further by the actor’s personal experiences and memories, their bodies in movement, their imagination and by a profound sense of ancestry. A symbolic territory has been created, where they were able to produce an identity covering mixed races and offsprings with different points of view.
