Exhibit of photos produced in old-school darkrooms
IN the digital age, there is almost no consequence or cost to taking pictures, beyond the electricity needed to charge your phone or dedicated camera. The impact on professional photographers has been dramatic. Darkroom photography has run into hard times, with critics saying it is a dying art that has failed to effectively adapt.
However, photographers Shao Wenhuan and Zane Mellupe are challenging this idea with two different shows at 1933 Contemporary, which make you see that “It is the photographer, not the camera, that is the instrument.”
Opening on Thursday, the exhibit shows how the artists use images as a way to explore the many forms of a scene in this wild, beautiful world.
Date: Through August 8, 9am-5pm
Venue: 1933 Contemporary
Address: 1-311, 1933 Shanghai, 611 Liyang Rd
Film: Recreating a Real Unreality
For artist Shao Wenhuan, a photograph is a secret about a secret. The process of image making starts from the exposure of the negative, with a series of works of amplifying and stabilizing the latent images in the darkroom, which goes on slowly but steadily until a picture is formed. Through peeling, scratching, overwriting on both the negatives and the photograph, the image-making continues from darkroom to clear chamber, from representing to recreating.
Shao Wenhuan is currently a professor at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou.
Entropy: Sending Out an Application for an N-sum
Artist Zane Mellupe’s interests lie in the power struggle between the image and the language, between the subjectivity of her personal anxieties facing multiple roles in family and in society, to the objectivity of the medium. In a world that is overflowed with images, pictures have transformed from the role of the storyteller to the story itself. Every picture brings us a new way of looking at the world. Like a kaleidoscope, every rotation brings a new picture and a new world that opens to N-sum explanations.
Zane Mellupe, from Latvia, is an artist and contemporary photographer based in Shanghai.
