Tour de Bund rides again for worthy causes

MORE than 600 cyclists took part in the annual Tour de Bund Charity Cycle Ride hosted by The Peninsula Shanghai on September 10. Celebrating its sixth anniversary this year, the pedal power event through the heart of Shanghai brings together people from all walks of life to promote the benefits of fitness and healthy living.

The Tour de Bund is an integral part of The Peninsula Shanghai’s year-round Corporate Social Responsibility program, which is inspired by the conviction that real luxury is about being considerate and responsible to the environment.

China’s award-winning professional cyclist Ding Yong joined the Tour de Bund for the second successive year.

Riders started from the iconic Nanpu Bridge. The professional and club cyclists finished their 50km Tour first, followed by leisure riders, families and the media, who undertook a 30km trip. All participants cycled along the Pudong waterfront before crossing the Huangpu River and arriving at the refreshment point at around 10am. The Tour continued after a short rest, with riders following a scenic path along the Bund to the finishing line at The Peninsula Shanghai.

“Keeping fit could be a motivation to go cycling. At first, I just wanted to be slimmer and in better shape. Later on, I found it was part of my daily life,” said young cyclist Anna after finishing the 30km ride, “Maybe next time I will challenge myself and join the 50km group.”

The after-race lunch party at The Peninsula Shanghai provided an opportunity for family members, sponsors, spectators and partners who did not participate in the cycle ride to experience the spirit of the Tour de Bund.

“We loved the cycling ride and the lunchtime party. I love to take photos and share cycling experiences with my friends,” said cyclist Peter.

“We are delighted to see this popular charity event go from strength to strength in 2016,” said Joseph W.Y. Chong, general manager and managing director of The Peninsula Shanghai Complex, at the lunchtime party. “Now in its sixth year, this hugely enjoyable event enables hotel guests, city residents and visitors to Shanghai to enjoy a Saturday morning cycle along the beautiful Huangpu riverside.”

“At the same time, the Tour riders help to highlight the importance of healthy living and pedal-power travel, and raise funds to support local charities,” Chong said.

In 2016, the Tour aimed higher than ever and gathered local and international club cyclists, company teams, leisure riders and families to pedal for a purpose, and raised a target of 300,000 yuan (US$44,974) for charitable causes — the largest annual amount since the event was founded in 2011.

At the same time, the cycling event is meant to increase awareness of pollution-free travel and shows how businesses and local communities can work together to create a greener city.
