Mayakovsky’s ‘Bedbug’ to be staged in August
DIRECTED by Beijing-born director Meng Jinghui, the drama “The Bedbug,” will be staged at Yihai Theatre in August. On a China tour, it will stage 10 performances during its Shanghai stop.
The story is based on a play written by Vladimir Mayakovsky in 1929. It tells the story of a young man who is frozen in a basement on his wedding day. After 50 years, he is “defrosted” but lives in a completely different world, in almost utopia. A bedbug frozen with him at that time becomes his companion in this new strange world.
The Chinese version of the play was first staged at the Beijing Children’s Art Theatre in 2000. This year, it was back on the stage in Beijing in late April. After its Shanghai performances it will head to Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province.
Meng is regarded as the most influential theater director in China and Asia. The multiple award-winning director has presented over 30 plays since 1990.
