Exhibition zeros in on palm prints of ancient queens

A photo exhibition by Chinese writer Chen Danyan that features palm prints of the queens of Rajasthan is on display at Shanghai Library, offering a glimpse into the ancient ways of India’s largest state.

Rajasthan is in western India and literally means “Land of Kingdoms” as it used to boast up to 23 kingdoms at any given time. The deserted royal palaces and castles still remain. The palm prints of former queens can be found on the walls.

In ancient times, women in Rajasthan, including queens, were buried with their dead husbands. Before they were put to death, they left palm prints as proof that they once lived.

The photographs were taken by Chinese writer Chen Danyan during her trip to India. Chen is famous for her travel essays.

The writer just released her latest book “My Travelling Philosophy.”
