Center works to save dogs

MORE than 400 dogs bound for a slaughterhouse in Yunnan Province were rescued by volunteers from China Command Center Task Force, a newly established group against the dog meat trade.

The Beijing-based center was established by Humane Society International along with several local animal protection organizations such as VShine and Xi’an Small Animal Protection Association after last month’s Yulin dog meat festival. The center said it will focus on coordinating a range of activities such as intercepting trucks taking dogs to be slaughtered.

Volunteers spotted and intercepted the truck transporting the dogs near Kunming. After a 50-hour confrontation, during which they provided food, water and shade to the dehydrated and exhausted dogs, they finally persuaded the truck driver to relinquish the animals and local animal control officials authorized the confiscation of all the dogs.

The dogs were crammed into small cages and lacking food and water. Thirty dogs did not survive, but the others will now receive veterinary care and be placed for adoption.

Dezhi Yu, general secretary of VShine and coordinator of the command center, said: “...Hundreds of dogs were in terrible conditions. We have to take a stand against the brutal dog meat trade in this region.”

Peter Li, Humane Society International’s China specialist, said: “Ending China’s cruel dog meat trade is a priority for Humane Society International, and this will be the first of many such rescues.”
