Artists given a chance to shine
A group of young artists from different cultural backgrounds made a splash as they engaged guests in various ways on Friday in Shanghai at the opening ceremony for the “Wait a Moment” exhibition.
To get things rolling, the French duo *LLND snapped portraits of guests as they entered the third floor of CacheT Boutique Hotel venue on Nanjing Road W. They then used a technique they called “time compression” to digitally alter the portraits, adding in features from other photos taken of the surroundings.
Each portrait was then sent to the individual by either e-mail or WeChat message.
Laurent Lettrée, one member of the *LLND duo, also got in the groove as DJ for the night, mixing a variety of dance tunes to keep people in an upbeat mood.
“Wait a Moment” invited 10 emerging contemporary artists from China and the West to showcase their works from insightful oil and acrylic paintings to playful knitted sculptures, to eye-opening multimedia installations.
The name of the artists and the exhibition, “Wait a Moment,” flashed on the LED screens on both sides of the hotel lobby, welcoming the guests.
Large canvases by French painter Alexandre Quairy were on display in the lobby, along with a digital installation by art group island6, featuring a girl in a ballet dress playing on a swing.
A dancer whose figure was projected using lasers onto the one of two central pillars of the lobby, danced restlessly, while on the third floor, guests found more artworks, such the “Untitled” series by Beijing-based artit Shen Na, which features female figures, and knitted installations of cactus by Hong Kong artist Thomas C. Chung.
“The close-up, interactive art experience aims to bring together some of the world’s most promising contemporary artists and buyers. The idea is that together they will further develop the city’s contemporary art market,” said Joyce Wu, editor-in-chief of Shanghai Daily, a co-sponsor of the exhibition.
“We have also launched Art Vision this year in order to support young and promising artists, to better interact with our readers and serve as a link connecting art lovers, buyers and collectors,” Wu added.
Cedric van Riel, co-founder of Llamart, said: “As co-organizer and curator of this exhibition we are delighted to work with Shanghai Daily and Cachet Boutique Hotel to provide to all Shanghainese art lovers a unique experience.”
Mil Wang, the other co-founder of Llamart, added that this event will be the first of a series gathering Chinese and international cutting edge artists in different unique locations in Shanghai.
“Llamart aims to be the link to contemporary art for a large audience and to sell affordable and promising artworks,” said Wang.
Cachet Boutique Hotel proved to be a superb venue for the exhibition.
The hotel’s General Manager, Fergus MacDougall, said the exhibition is exciting and that it was great meeting the artists behind the art.
“Cachet Boutique Hotel is immensely proud to partner with Shanghai Daily and Llamart on this inaugural event. Working with the esteemed curators Llamart gives us an incredible opportunity to further fulfill the hotels vision of being ‘where the worlds of art and luxury converge’,” he said.
MacDougall added: “Shanghai Daily has always been a leader in connecting the local community with arts and culture in Shanghai and on this occasion we all come together to offer an exhibition that in many ways reflects the hotel itself, a display of stunning aesthetics with more than a couple of twists and surprises.”
