Williams sisters progress to the 4th round
SERENA Williams saw that older sister Venus was progressing to the fourth round at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time since 2011 and it inspired her own comeback win yesterday at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Top-ranked Serena Williams made a lackluster start to her third-round match against No. 26-ranked Elina Svitolina on Rod Laver Arena, knowing when she walked out for her match that Venus was down a set and a break on a nearby court‚ but picked up her game after realizing her sister was advancing with a 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1 win over Camila Giorgi.
“I saw (Venus’) score and thought ‘Wow she’s winning, well I can do better,’” Serena Williams said after her 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 win. “I thought, ‘Wow, she’s been through so much with her illness... Gosh, if she can do it, I’m perfectly healthy, I’m fine. I should be able to do it, too.’”
Two-time champion Victoria Azarenka had a 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 25 Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.
Novak Djokovic advanced to the fourth round for the ninth straight year with a 7-6 (8), 6-3, 6-4 win over Fernando Verdasco.
Defending champion Stan Wawrinka cruised to his third straight-sets victory with service breaks to clinch all three sets on his way to a 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 win over Jarkko Nieminen. He’ll play Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who had a 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 win over Vasek Pospisil.
Eighth-seeded Milos Raonic reached the fourth round, firing 22 aces in a 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 win over Benjamin Becker of Germany. He will next play No. 12 Feliciano Lopez, who had a 7-6 (6), 6-4, 7-6 (3) win over Jerzy Janowicz.
Two American men lost night matches, with No. 5 Kei Nishikori beating Steve Johnson 6-7 (7), 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 and Gilles Muller defeating No. 19 John Isner 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6), 6-4.
