Wawrinka packs off Ferrer to reach final

STANISLAS Wawrinka made it into his first ever Monte Carlo Masters final with a 6-1, 7-6 (3) semifinal win over David Ferrer in Monaco yesterday.

Ferrer had toppled Rafael Nadal, the eight-time champion, in Friday’s quarterfinal.

But the Spanish sixth seed was unable to mete out the same treatment to Wawrinka, with the Australian Open champion sweeping into a one-set lead before holding his nerve in the second set tie break.

The Swiss third seed will face the winner of the second semifinal between his good friend Roger Federer and defending champion Novak Djokovic.

Second seed Djokovic, who has kept mum about a right wrist injury he is carrying, only managed a 20-minute pre-match warm-up, hitting just a few serves before packing it in early. Federer is looking for his first Monte Carlo title after losing three finals.

In Ostrava, the Czech Republic took a 1-0 lead over defending champion Italy in the Fed Cup semifinals yesterday after Lucie Safarova defeated Sara Errani 6-4, 6-1 in the opening singles.

Sixth-ranked Petra Kvitova was playing yesterday’s second singles for the host against the 54th-ranked Camila Giorgi.

In Brisbane, Andrea Petkovic and Angelique Kerber had straight-set wins to give Germany a 2-0 lead over Australia in their Fed Cup semifinal.

Petkovic opened with a 6-1, 7-6 (7) win over Sam Stosur while Kerber eased past Casey Dellacqua 6-1, 6-0.
