Nishikori rises 2 spots to replace Nadal in top 5
JAPAN’S Kei Nishikori climbed two places to 5th in the latest ATP rankings released yesterday at the expense of Rafael Nadal, who slips to 7th.
Britain’s Andy Murray continues to lead the top 10 which is unchanged aside from Nishikori’s upward move, which could have a bearing on his and Nadal’s seeding for the upcoming Barcelona ATP tournament. The pair met in the final last year, with Nadal prevailing. Nishikori has opted to skip this week’s Monte Carlo Masters where Nadal goes for an unprecedented 10th title. Meanwhile, Czech teenager Marketa Vondrousova climbed 116 places to 117 in the WTA rankings following her victory the day before at the Biel/Bienne Open. The 17-year-old called it “the biggest win of my career” after defeating Anett Kontaveit of Estonia 6-4, 7-6 (6) in the Swiss tournament final. At the other end of the age spectrum, 37-year-old Italian Francesca Schiavone moved up 64 places to 104th by winning the title in Bogota. The 2010 French Open champion is playing her final season on the circuit.
