Kerber crashes out in Madrid

AUSTRALIAN Open champion Angelique Kerber was dumped out of the Madrid Open in the first round by Czech Barbora Strycova, losing 4-6, 2-6 yesterday.

Kerber had travelled to the Spanish capital in fine form having retained her title in Stuttgart last week.

However, the second seed was outplayed by world No. 33 Strycova to bow out in just over an hour on court.

Heading into their claycourt opener, the German hadn’t dropped a single set to Strycova in four prior meetings. But the third-ranked Kerber committed three double faults and was broken by Strycova four times.

Strycova will face Madison Keys in the second round after she rallied past fellow American Alison Riske 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

US Open finalist Roberta Vinci is also out after losing in straight sets to Montenegran Danka Kovinic 4-6, 2-6.

Eighth seed Carla Suarez Navarro advanced, though, after the Spaniard came from a set down to beat Hungary’s Timea Babos 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
