Hingis to make singles return
FIVE-TIME grand slam champion Martina Hingis will play her first competitive singles match since 2007 in a Fed Cup playoff today.
Hingis was drawn yesterday to face Agnieszka Radwanska in the opening singles match when Switzerland plays Poland. Hingis was expected to play only doubles in her first Fed Cup action in 17 years. Her selection makes her eligible for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
The 34-year-old Hingis was chosen ahead of No. 129 Romina Oprandi to support Timea Bacsinszky in singles.
Hingis and Bacsinszky are also scheduled to play in tomorrow’s doubles. The Swiss teamed up with India’s Sania Mirza in the women’s doubles and won the WTA Family Circle on Sunday. They have already become the world No. 1 team in the Race to Singapore, the season-finale, where top 8 teams compete at the end of year.
