Giorgi upsets Svitolina in Birmingham
ITALIAN qualifier Camila Giorgi pulled off a surprise three-set win over No. 2 seed Elina Svitolina yesterday to reach the quarterfinals of the Aegon Classic in Birmingham.
Giorgi won six of the last seven games as she triumphed 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 over the Ukrainian.
The 25-year-old will face Australian Ashleigh Barty in the last eight at the Edgbaston Priory Club.
Spain’s Garbine Muguruza also moved into the quarterfinals, enjoying a 6-1, 6-4 win over American Alison Riske.
Britain’s Johanna Konta was taking on American Coco Vandeweghe later and France’s Kristina Mladenovic was up against China’s Shuai Zhang.
In Halle, Germany, world No. 9 Kei Nishikori’s Wimbledon preparations suffered a setback yesterday when he was forced to retire injured from his Gerry Weber Open round of 16 match against Russian Karen Khatchanov.
The Japanese third seed needed to take a medical time-out to treat a back injury before playing on for a few points and retiring with the score at 3-2 in the first set for the Russian.
Wimbledon, the only grand slam to be played on grass, starts on July 3.
In London, two former champions reached the quarterfinals of the Aegon Championships yesterday, with fourth seed Marin Cilic overpowering American teenager Stefan Kozlov and Sam Querrey getting the better of Jordan Thompson.
Cilic, who claimed the title at the prestigious Wimbledon warm-up event in 2012, was imperious against Kozlov, winning 6-0, 6-4 on Queen’s Club’s center court.
Big-serving American Querrey, winner in 2010, cut short a dream week for Thompson with a 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-3 victory. The Australian, who only scraped into the draw as a lucky loser after failing to qualify, had knocked out world No. 1 Andy Murray in the first round.
