Gasquet puts France 1-up against Croatia

RICHARD Gasquet gave France a 1-0 lead over hosts Croatia in the Davis Cup semifinals, winning the opening tie against Borna Coric in straight sets in Zadar yesterday.

Gasquet, who found out he would play in singles after Gael Monfils left the injury-hit France team on Wednesday, was in complete control and prevailed 6-2, 7-6 (5), 6-1, limiting his mistakes to just 13 unforced errors.

Gasquet, 30, improved his singles record to 12-8.

Lucas Pouille, a US Open quarterfinalist last month, was taking on 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic in the second match.

France is without Monfils and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who have both been ruled out by knee problems.

The winner of the tie will take on either Britain or Argentina in the final. Scotland’s Andy Murray, the world No. 2, was battling Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina in London yesterday in the first rubber of their semifinal.

In New Delhi, Feliciano Lopez claimed a four-set victory over India’s Ramkumar Ramanathan to give Spain a 1-0 lead after the first singles match of their Davis Cup World Group playoff yesterday.

The left-handed Lopez, who took court in place of star player Rafael Nadal, completed a 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win in two hours and 25 minutes.

World No. 4 Nadal, who was slated to open the three-day contest, pulled out at the last moment due to a stomach infection. However the 26th-ranked Lopez did not disappoint with his strong serve and neat baseline play.

Spain’s David Ferrer was scheduled to clash with Saketh Myneni in the second singles rubber of the day.

Earlier, hosts Japan and Australia took 2-0 leads in their World Group playoffs against Ukraine and Slovakia, respectively.
