Federer puts Swiss in Davis final

FRANCE will host Switzerland in the Davis Cup final in November after Roger Federer gave the Swiss the winning point against Italy in Geneva yesterday.

Federer reached the first Davis Cup final of his career with a comfortable 6-2, 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over Fabio Fognini in the first of the semifinal’s reverse singles.

That made it 3-1 for the Swiss thus ensuring they would contest the final of the annual team event for the first time since 1992 when they lost to the United States.

France made sure of playing in the final for the first time since 2010 on Saturday when its doubles team of Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated Czechs Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek in four sets.

The final will be played in France from November 21-23, with the northern city of Lille being touted as the likely host.

Earlier, Jiri Vesely salvaged some pride for defending champion the Czech Republic as he beat Julien Benneteau 6-4, 6-3 in a consolation win against France in Paris.

France won the last of its nine cups in 2001. Frenchman Gael Monfils was taking on Lukas Rosol in the last reverse singles match later.

In Chicago, twins Bob and Mike Bryan, fresh off a US Open doubles triumph, delivered a tie-clinching point on Saturday for the US, ensuring the Americans will play in the Davis Cup World Group next year.

In a playoff against Slovakia, the Bryans routed Lukas Lacko and Norbert Gombos 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 on indoor hardcourts.

That gave the US squad an insurmountable 3-0 lead in the tie after singles triumphs on Friday by John Isner and Sam Querrey.

The Americans, who have won the trophy a record 32 times, last captured the Davis Cup in 2007.

In Perth, host Australia completed a 5-0 Davis Cup win over Uzbekistan yesterday a day after clinching a spot in the elite World Group.

In reverse singles, Sam Groth of Australia beat Temur Ismailov 6-3, 6-2 before Nick Kyrgios defeated Sanjar Fayziev 6-1, 6-1 in just 40 minutes.

Australia did not drop a set in any of its five matches.
