Hosszu shatters 400m medley world record to win gold

HUNGARY'S Katinka Hosszu shattered the 400m individual medley world record Saturday to seize Olympic gold in Rio.

The "Iron Lady" lived up to her billing, seizing control from the start and closing in 4min 26.36sec to claim the Olympic gold that has long eluded her and break the previous record of 4:28.43 set by China's Ye Shiwen in winning gold in London four years ago.

At the 300m mark, Hosszu was move than five seconds under world-record pace, and she broke Ye's mark by 2.07sec.

Far behind her, the battle for second unfolded with American Maya DiRado taking silver in 4:31.15 and Spain's Mireia Belmonte third in 4:32.39.
