Hangzhou gets short-course nod

HANGZHOU will host the 2018 short-course world championships, world governing body FINA said yesterday.

The Zhejiang Province city beat bids from the Peruvian capital Lima and the United Arab Emirates for the December 3-7 event.

“The city of Hangzhou will offer optimal conditions for the organization of these championships. There is a very strong commitment from the local authorities to have this event in this dynamic metropolis,” FINA President Dr Julio Maglione said in Paris.

The city is the hometown of Luo Xuejuan, the 2004 Olympic gold medalist in the 100-meter breaststroke. “This is a dream that has come true. My hometown is Hangzhou and I always hoped that one day we’d be able to organize a world championships in the most beautiful city in China,” she said.

The 2016 edition will take place in Windsor, Canada.
