Australia’s Sullivan pulls out
AUSTRALIAN triple Olympian Eamon Sullivan was yesterday forced out of next month’s Glasgow Commonwealth Games through injury and was replaced by Matthew Abood.
Sullivan, 28, who qualified for the men’s 50-meter freestyle after winning the national title in April, has shoulder trouble. The former 100-meter freestyle world record holder said it was a difficult decision to withdraw, but one that was made with the long-term goal of the 2016 Rio Olympics in mind. “It is very disappointing that I am having to withdraw from the Commonwealth Games team,” he said in a statement.
Abood, a member of the 2011 world championship winning relay team, originally missed out on a spot for Glasgow after a swim off with James Magnussen for the final spot in 50 freestyle.
