Zhang transfer shatters domestic record
A NEW domestic player transfer record was set after Chinese League One side Tianjin Quanjian signed goalkeeper Zhang Lu in a reported 70 million yuan (US$10.65 million) deal.
Zhang’s former club Chinese Super League side Liaoning Hongyun announced Zhang’s departure through its official Weibo account yesterday.
“Since Zhang is eager to play for a team from his hometown, we respect his decision despite previous attempts to retain him,” the statement read. Tianjin Quanjian confirmed the signing of the 28-year-old Tianjin native later.
Zhang, a national team member, was captain of Liaoning. According to Shenyang Daily, Zhang’s transfer fee reached 70 million yuan, a new record for a domestic player, surpassing the 66-million yuan record set by midfielder Sun Ke, who will also play for Quanjian next season.
Tianjin Quanjian was called Tianjin Songjiang FC before it was bought by the Quanjian Natural Medicine Group last year. The team finished ninth in the 16-team Chinese League One in 2015. Quanjian was the main sponsor of CSL side Tianjin Teda before their partnership ended in the middle of last season.
It is believed it was Quanjian’s decision to buy 26-year-old Sun for Tianjin Teda from his former team Jiangsu Sainty last June. After Quanjian broke up with the Tianjin club, Sun had to stay back in Jiangsu for the rest of the season.
Tianjin Quanjian announced yesterday that Sun will play for the second-tier club next year. By boasting the top-2 most expensive domestic players for the coming season, the club has set a clear goal of advancing to the CSL.
Tianjin Quanjian’s other recent foreign signings include former Sevilla and Sao Paulo star Luis Fabiano of Brazil and fellow forward Jadson Rodrigues.
