Walcott, Cazorla in new Arsenal deals

ARSENAL forward Theo Walcott and Spanish midfielder Santi Cazorla have signed new contracts with the Gunners, the English Premier League club said yesterday.

England international Walcott, who has scored 76 goals in 302 appearances since joining Arsenal from Southampton in 2006, has signed a new four-year deal at the Emirates.

The 26-year-old had one year remaining on his previous contract but he ended the last campaign strongly, netting a hat-trick against West Bromwich Albion on the final day of the season before scoring in the FA Cup final win over Aston Villa.

Spanish international Cazorla, 30, joined from Malaga in 2012 and has made 148 appearances for Arsenal, scoring 27 goals.

“We’re delighted to have extended the contracts of Santi and Theo. Both are top quality players who are hugely important and influential to our squad,” manager Arsene Wenger told the club’s website.

“As well as their huge contributions on the pitch, they both have a great deal of experience and are very popular off the pitch. We’re very pleased with them both signing contract extensions, as it provides our squad with further stability of quality.”

FA Cup holder Arsenal plays Premier League champion Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Villa has signed French midfielder Jordan Veretout from Ligue 1 club Nantes on a five-year contract, the Premier League side said yesterday.

The 22-year-old has joined for an undisclosed fee reported to be around 7 million pounds (US$10.9 million).

“I’m really pleased Jordan decided to choose Aston Villa over the other options he had and opt to continue his development with us,” manager Tim Sherwood told the club’s website. “He is only 22 years old but he is vastly experienced for someone that age. He has played over 140 games in Ligue 1 and is a really exciting young player. I know he is very highly rated over in France so we are delighted to get this deal over the line.”

Veretout is the fourth player to arrive at Villa Park from Ligue 1 during the close season following the signings of Jordan Amavi, Idrissa Gueye and Jordan Ayew.
